Celebration of the First Two Way Transatlantic Communication in 1903

On Wednesday the 19th of January 2023 the Poldhu Amateur Radio Club commemorated the 120th anniversary of the first two way transatlantic wireless communication. A telegraphic message from the American President Theodore Roosevelt to King Edward VII sent greetings to the King and his people. Roosevelt said he was “Taking advantage of the wonderful triumph of scientific research and ingenuity,” The King returned the President’s good wishes and the age of the wireless began.

At Poldhu, stations were operated on the forty and twenty metre amateur bands and conditions allowed contacts to be made into North America including Nova Scotia.

Pictured are Neil G4SEN operating on forty metres and Jim G8GLL on twenty metres.
