8 March 2025

A date for your diaries!
We’re organising a trip to PK Porthcurno on Saturday 8th March. Everyone is welcome to attend, and the invitation is extended to Poldhu Amateur Radio Club (PARC) and Radio Operators Cornwall (ROC). A chance to catch up with others!
PK Porthcurno is a fascinating museum and historic site, being at the forefront of global communication since the 1870’s. Staff give excellent presentations and there is an extensive visitor centre displaying artifacts from the past 150 years, an underground operations centre, visitor cafe and ample car parking.

Although it’s not wireless, or radio as we say today, the visit will be of great interest to us all. Pre-dating Marconi’s work by some 30 years, and now running cables out of Cornwall to all over the Empire, the Porthcurno Cable company were concerned about Marconi’s arrival at Poldhu on The Lizard.
They visualised the threat to their own technology that he brought about and the rivalries were about to become deep and bitter! Some 32 years after Marconi’s wireless transmission across the Atlantic, the two companies eventually merged to become Cable and Wireless in 1934.
Our visit will take advantage of being out-of-season, thus less busy.
