124th Marconi TransAtlantic Wireless Anniversary

Radio Amateurs from the Poldhu Amateur Radio Club will be celebrating the 124th anniversary of the first radio transmission across the Atlantic in 1901 on the 12th December 2025. Marconi and two assistants traveled to Newfoundland in December 1901 and on December 12th the pre-arranged signal of three dots (the letter ‘S’ in Morse code) was heard by Marconi on Signal Hill at St. John’s.

Visitors are invited to join us on Friday 12th December from 9 am to 4 pm to learn about the major part that Cornwall played in the history of wireless communications. Parking at the Centre is at the top of the hill at Poldhu.

Radio Amateurs will be using various radio bands from the Marconi Centre throughout the day and hope to contact our friends in Newfoundland and elsewhere. If you are a licensed Radio Amateur you are very welcome to operate as part of the event; please email secretary@gb2gm.org or contact Cliff G3UYN who is coordinating the activities.

The Marconi Centre is open on Sunday afternoons throughout the year.

It's doubtful whether even Marconi, listening on Signal Hill, St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1901 could have imagined the significance of an extremely short signal he had just received, nor what it would lead to. From little acorns.... that first transatlantic radio signal introduced everything from broadcasting to satellite communications, mobile phones, broadband, the Internet, and the World Wide Web - and Poldhu was at the forefront of it all.
